Gasburg’s Story

When the Gasburg Mission began in June 1963, the original members met for worship in the Milhon housing addition, across State Road 42 from our present location. Gasburg Baptist Church (GBC) was a “church plant” from the First Baptist Church in Mooresville, Indiana. Gasburg was a wide spot in the road located halfway between the towns of Mooresville and Monrovia, with a gas station and country store located along the State Road. The first church building was built directly behind this store, with the entrance to the church from Gasburg Road. The original sanctuary could seat 125 people. In the early 1970’s, kindergarten was taught at the church as there were no kindergarten programs in the schools. The church building was damaged by fire in 1981 and was rebuilt.

GBC continued to grow and the congregation broke ground on a new addition in 1991, which included a new sanctuary, multi-purpose room, kitchen, and offices. The new sanctuary expanded seating to 225. The original building was maintained and transformed into Sunday School classrooms and the addition of a food pantry ministry began.

2010 brought another expansion, which transformed the kitchen and multi-purpose room into a much-needed larger sanctuary with a 400-seat capacity. A new foyer was constructed, adding offices and more classroom space to the northern part of the church building. In 2020, a shelter house was added to the grounds to provide an outdoor venue for summertime fellowship meals.  In 2022 we paid off the remainder of our mortgage, and today GBC is debt-free.

What is God is doing at Gasburg?

God is alive and at work through our volunteer-led ministries at GBC. Our members use their God-given talents to serve and engage the surrounding Mooresville and Monrovia communities:

Grief Share is a dynamic program at our church and a successful means of ministering to those within our church and community as they navigate the loss of a loved one.

Small Groups encourage fellowship and allow our members to grow closer together inside and outside of the church as they strengthen their walk in Christ.

For three decades the GBC Food Pantry has been meeting the needs of our community. GBC volunteers use the Food Pantry as a ministry to engage community members in need and share the gospel of Christ.

During the annual Monrovia Festival each September, GBC helps illustrate God’s gift of salvation by providing free cookies, bottled water, and snow-cones to the community.

Over the past sixty years Gasburg Baptist Church has served faithfully in the local community and beyond, sending mission teams to Alabama, Colorado, Kentucky, and Kansas. We believe in sending missionaries internationally and currently support a church family member who is serving in North Africa. We also send church members to Ecuador with the OnMission2 Program, which GBC helped found through the Indiana State Convention of Baptists.

Opportunity

Gasburg Baptist Church primarily serves the community of Monrovia, Indiana and the Monroe-Gregg School District. We are a rapidly growing community of young families just 25 minutes southwest of Indianapolis. We have the opportunity to spread God’s word and share His love with new families moving into our community. There is potential for more diverse and robust local outreach programs within our church and community. We are eagerly praying that God will provide Gasburg with a pastor who is ready to lead us into the future and help us reach the next generation.

Demographics

Gasburg Baptist Church is located in northern Morgan County, Indiana. Historically a small farming community, Monrovia’s population has more than doubled in the past twenty years.  According to the 2020 Census, the population of Monrovia was 1,643 up from 1,063 in 2010 and 628 in 2000.  Several large housing additions have been built in recent years, and further population growth is anticipated as the Indianapolis metropolitan area continues to expand.
